The Right to Read

A documentary in production about the early literacy crisis from award winning director Jenny Mackenzie, and executive produced by Amy Redford, Katy Drake Bettner, and Allison Gushée Molkenthin.

The Right to Read shares the stories of three American families, a courageous principal, and a state senator who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read. Despite barriers like socio-economic status, racism, and language, our characters fight to close disparity gaps with educational technology and early reading programs grounded in science.

When it’s completed, The Right to Read will be submitted to top film festivals around the globe, and have an education and outreach plan focused on collaborative community screenings that address the early literacy crisis, and focus on harnessing technological tools with parental engagement to close disparities gaps and create more literate communities.
